Highlights of the Tour
Our guided visit will take begin at 4pm, and take us through the historic and modern features of this spectacular building, including:
-
The Underwriting Room (‘The Room’): The vast, 60-metre-high central atrium and trading floor where major global insurance deals are struck, overlooked by the impressive glass barrel-vaulted roof.
-
The Lutine Bell: The famous bell, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Lutine in 1799, which is housed in the Rostrum. Traditionally rung to announce the loss of an insured ship, it is now only rung for ceremonial occasions.
-
The Loss Book: The historic volume, still updated with a quill and ink, used to record significant losses insured by Lloyd’s over the last 300 years.
-
The Adam Room (The Committee Room): A stunning contrast to the high-tech modern building, this beautifully preserved 18th-century dining room, designed by Robert Adam in 1763, was transported piece-by-piece from a previous Lloyd’s building.
-
The Exterior Glass Lifts: Experience one of the building’s key architectural features—the 12 external glass lifts—which were the first of their kind in the UK, offering unique views of the City of London.
-
The Nelson Collection: A fascinating collection of artefacts relating to Admiral Lord Nelson, including a 200-year-old logbook from the Battle of Trafalgar.
-
The ‘Inside-Out’ Architecture: A close-up view of the external service towers housing all the building’s pipes, ducts, and stairwells, designed to maximise flexible space within ‘The Room’.
